The four ways to practice
Pick one before you press play. Never just watch.
Watching English is not practicing English. Twenty minutes with a job beats an hour of scrolling every time.
Gist pass
Captions off. Watch once. Say out loud in one sentence what it was about.
Caption pass
Watch without captions, then again with them. Note what you missed — and then ask the important question: why did you miss it?
- Glued to the word next to it?
- A small word crushed to nothing?
- An ending you did not hear?
- A sound you confused?
Shadow
Pick thirty seconds. Play it and talk at the same time as the speaker — not after. You will fall behind; jump back in.
Do the same thirty seconds every day for a week rather than a new clip each time.
Decode fifteen seconds
Fifteen seconds. Ten replays. Write every word you can, fill one more blank each pass, then check against the captions.
About the speed control
Every player here has a speed setting. 0.75× is a real tool — use it inside a decode, when you are trying to hear exactly where one word ends and the next begins.
