Live class guide
For the teacher, and for the student to read before class.
60 minutesMidpoint recording — do this first
Same paragraph as the Week 1 baseline, then ninety seconds of free speech on the same topic. Label it Midpoint · Week 3.
Then play the baseline and the midpoint back to back and say nothing until the student speaks first.
Rapid question drill
Fire questions at natural speed, mixing rising and falling intonation, and vary who they are aimed at so the student has to decide whether it landed on them.
- “Whaddaya usually do on Fridays?”
- “You've been here how long?”
- “Didja get a chance to look at it?”
- “So you're not coming.” (falling — still a question)
- “K'n ya hear me okay?” / “You can't hear me?”
Repair phrases under pressure
Tell a story and deliberately mumble one word per sentence. The student's job is to stop you and name the gap — not to ask for the whole sentence again.
Push for the specific form: “you went where?” rather than “can you repeat?”
Couldn't-Catch clinic
Work the list as usual. This week it should be full of missed questions. For each one, ask what the student did in the two seconds afterwards — that is the part being trained, not the comprehension.
Endings check
Play the Workshop 3 recording. Check syllable counts rather than sound quality: walked = 1, finished = 2, asked = 1.
Set the week ahead
Warn the student that Week 4 is the hardest week in the course — three or more voices at once. Tell them in advance that catching less is expected and is not a sign of going backwards.
